Mini-Split Air Conditioning Versus Central AC
At ACR Air Conditioning & Heating, we are your HVAC specialists in Lake Charles, Louisiana. We take pride in our dependability and reliability. Both central and mini-split air conditioning systems have their advantages, but for efficiency and return on investment, a mini-split AC may be the better choice.
Mini-Split AC Design
There are two parts to a typical mini-split: an outdoor AC unit and indoor air control units, often called air handlers. The indoor units are wall mounted high on the wall, allowing the cooler air to drift downward. Each unit will have a remote control to support customized cooling.
The indoor control units are connected to the outdoor AC unit with a refrigerant line. The system does not need ductwork to move the cool air around the house. These systems have a 25% to 30% longer life than central units.
Mini-split ACs are inherently more efficient than central ACs because homeowners can set lower temperatures in the rooms used daily, and the least used areas can be a little warmer. The net effect is that you control every area using less energy where you don’t need as much cooling.
These AC units use only the amount of energy needed to cool. Because they cool an entire home instead of single rooms at a time, a central unit uses more energy. Installing a mini-split has higher upfront costs, but the investment is recovered through lower energy costs.

The many factors to consider when choosing a system include the existing AC system, the home’s structure, and the owner’s lifestyle.
