Can a Home Get Air Conditioning If It Doesn’t Have Ductwork?

September 13, 2022

Many homes in Louisiana weren’t originally built with ductwork, so they’re not able to have central air conditioning systems without having extensive work done first. If you live in a home that doesn’t have ductwork, you know that it can be hard to deal with our hot and humid summers. Fortunately, you can still have air conditioning installed.

Window Air Conditioners

There are smaller air conditioners that can be installed in windows. They’re relatively affordable and are good at cooling down a single room. Plus, they’re portable and easy to install. A variation on a window unit is a portable air conditioner, which is free-standing. It can be placed anywhere, but its hose does have to be extended through a window.

Mini-Splits

Another solution is to get a mini-split ductless system installed. A mini-split system consists of an indoor air handler and an outdoor condenser. The indoor air handler can be mounted directly on the wall, and many people prefer its understated appearance. It can run quietly, especially compared with a window or portable unit, and it does a great job of cooling a room. Multiple indoor units can be installed in a home, thereby giving you multiple zones. You can keep your bedroom cooler at night, for example, or turn the AC on higher in the living areas during the day. Some newer mini-split units have “smart” functionality. They can be controlled with mobile devices and programmed to turn on at certain points, and this can enhance their energy efficiency even more.
